Surveys that MASTER
MARINE carries out include:
•
Draught surveys Carried out to ascertain
tonnages loaded or discharged. Should a
dispute arise deadweight surveys are often
carried out for Charterers, Owners or
Shippers of cargoes. The surveyor will
request the attendance of at least one of
the ship•s crew to show him the sounding
pipes and to conduct the sounding of the
ballast tanks together with the ship•s
representative.
• Bunker Surveys
Conducted in order to ascertain how much
fuel is on board the vessel or being loaded
on board the vessel, bunker surveys are
carried out for Charterers or Ship Owners.
The surveyor will request the attendance
of at least one of the ship•s crew to show
him the sounding pipes and to conduct the
sounding of the fuel tanks together with the
ship•s representative.

• Loading and
discharging of vehicles The surveyor
will inspect the vehicles in the loading
area noting any pre-existing damage and
securing arrangements on the vessel.
Photographs will be taken of any damage or
poor securing arrangements that may have
been contributory to the damage noted.
The surveyor will record the chassis numbers
and all visible or missing standard
equipment that may have been removed from
the vehicles. It will also be recorded
whether they are new or used vehicles. Any
discrepancies will be noted and reported.

Container unpack / repack surveys
Container unpack and repack surveys may be
carried out when damage has occurred to a
container and the interests of the Shipper,
Receiver or Charterer•s may require
protection. Container unpack or repack
surveys may be required where there is
damage to the container. They are also
required where there is a broken, missing or
discrepant container seal.
The unpack repack
can be done at the warehouse after or before
discharge. Unpack surveys are also carried
out in respect of reefer container
malfunctions. The damage will be assessed,
photographic evidence taken, and light or
temperature testing done and recorded. The
surveyor will include in his report his
opinion on the cause of damage or the
estimated loss according to the Bill of
Lading.

ON hire conditions surveys
An on-hire survey is carried out to protect
the interests of either the Owners or
Charterers when chartering of a vessel
occurs. The survey includes a visual
inspection and requires calculation of fuel
on board at time of on-hire, along with a
full inventory of existing damage to the
vessel, inspection of the ship•s
certificates and inspection of cargo working
gear. Photographic evidence is taken in all
instances and included in the report.
Hose testing and tank top condition surveys
may also be carried out as required by the
client.
• OFF hire condition surveys
An off hire survey is carried out to
protect the interests of the Owners and
Charterers to ascertain the overall
condition of a vessel. An off hire
survey involves visuaI inspection and may
require the calculation of fuel on board at
the time of off-hire, along with a full
inventory of existing damage to the vessel,
inspection of the ship•s certificates and
inspection of cargo working gear. A
detailed report is issued with photographic
evidence in all instances.
• Heavy
weather damage surveys and investigations
Carried out for the Charterer•s, the
Charterer•s Cargo Receivers and Ship Owners
and operators. These surveys include
investigation of stability information,
weather patterns and weather information
during the voyage, the vessel•s response to
boisterous weather encountered, the commands
of the Master of the vessel in response to
the heavy weather and inspections of the
cargo and any cargo damage with particular
attention to the lashing arrangements.
Photographic evidence will be taken and
included with the report.
•
Pre-Purchase or General Vessel condition
surveys These surveys include the
vessel•s sea worthiness and cargo
worthiness. Inspections of all sealing
arrangements for cargo holds are carried out
including access hatches, non-return valves
on the coamings and sounding caps.
Seaworthiness includes documentation,
company commitment to safe operation, safe
manning and general condition of engine
rooms and accommodation spaces.
•
Steel and general preloading surveys
Include inspection of cargo at the warehouse
and on board the vessel as well as the
performance of silver nitrate testing for
the presence of chlorides. Pre-shipment
damage is observed and reported to the
relevant authority to allow for substitution
or short loading as required.
All steel
and general cargo pre-loading surveys are
accompanied by a visual inspection of the
hatch condition highlighting deficiencies,
which are brought to the ship•s and
principal•s attention.
• Personal
injury investigations Personal injury
investigations include checking for the
vessel•s liability and the reasons
surrounding the incident. Recommendations
for the appointment of legal advice can also
be made when required.
A full report and
photographic information accompany all
surveys undertaken. Copies of any
documentation received pertaining to a
survey will be included in the report.
